About our literacy program.
Giving back is a core principle for Minds On. Our business has grown and all of us here have prospered, largely due to our strong educations and the opportunities that Central Ohio has given us. We’ve made a point of giving back in some way every year, but now we want to make an even bigger impact and not restrict it to just the holidays or special events.
That’s why we’ve created the Minds On Learning program.
This program is designed to help improve literacy and learning. It’s a seed program, just a start, and we’d love for you to get involved, too.
Here’s what we’re doing:
We’ve selected a single school, Eastgate Elementary, part of the Columbus City Schools, as our initial program participant. Eastgate has eager students, but the majority of them come from families living below the poverty level. Many of these students don’t own books of their own, and with school budgets tightening, we feel that there is a real need for supporting literacy in students’ early years.
After our initial request, we had a large number of schools apply for the program and we wish we could include them all; however, we’ve selected Eastgate as our pilot program site. We’ve supplied Eastgate with a new selection of books for the students. We also designed an incentive program to encourage and reward students who read. All students will receive a Minds On Learning card, and with each book they read, they’ll earn a stamp for their card. When they collect three stamps, they’ll be able to purchase a book from the Scholastic Book Club — a book that the individual students can keep as their own.
We’re hoping to light a fire under these students by encouraging a love of reading and a love of books. But, there’s much more to do. These classrooms need more books and other supplies to support classroom education.
